For a more intimate, bed-and-breakfast-style accommodation, a night at Le Clos Saint-Louis is like stepping right back into the history of Vieux Quebec. Built in 1844 and lovingly refurbished by present owner Madame Ghislaine Donais, Le Clos’ 18 rooms are decorated with exquisitely graceful, Victorian-era antiques. The floor is gleaming hardwood, the lobby windows are draped in floral, floor-to-ceiling curtains and the chime of a stately grandfather clock echoes hauntingly through the house.
Each room at Le Clos bears the name of one of the inhabitants of the house over its lifespan, and each is uniquely decorated. Ours featured a four-poster bed, elaborate stone fireplace and a spa bathtub for two with Lord & Mayfair toiletries.
Personalized attention is the catchphrase at Le Clos, whose small staff prefers to customize itineraries and special needs according to the requirements of the couples who visit. In the past, they’ve added chocolate and flowers to rooms for honeymooners, and the week following our departure, they’d arranged a hot air balloon ride for a man who wanted to propose to his girlfriend while airborne.
“People come here for privacy and intimacy, because it’s very quiet here,” says their marketing consultant Steve De Champlain. “Because we’re a small establishment, we really take care of all the fine details.”
That includes a complimentary breakfast each morning prepared by Madame Donais herself, and consisting of toast, cereal, eggs, pastries, bacon, fruits and much more... The gracious owner makes an effort to get to know her guests as they dine, offering advice on where to go and carefully explaining her passionate restoration of this historic home into a guest house that perfectly reflects its Old-World grandeur. Room rates at Le Clos range from $165 to $225 per night.
